The Goodyear Speedway Wide Tread F70-15 Raised White Letter tire is a special tire, designed to fit the classic Chevrolet Corvette. Specifically, this bias ply tire fits 1970, 1971 and 1972 Corvette Stingray, and it features a special two ply nylon construction, instead of the standard polyglas construction that other Goodyear tires featured during this time frame. The Poly/fiberglass construction didn't prove to be beneficial with the four wheel independent suspension beneath the Corvette, so Goodyear developed this tire without the fiberglass belting. The lettering and tread pattern is authentic, and this non-belted tire is a proper fitment for your 70-72 Corvette Stingray.
This is a raised white letter tire, sometimes called RWL for short. Raised white letter tires became common in the late sixties on muscle cars like the Pontiac GTO and high performance pony cars, like the Ford Mustang. Raised white letter tires feature white rubber that is built into the tire's sidewall when the carcass is being assembled. The letters are formed when the tire is vulcanized in a curing mold, and then buffed clean to reveal bright white letters. Popular raised white letter tires include Firestone Wide Oval and Wide Oval Radials, BFGoodrich Radial T/A, and Goodyear Polyglas tires.
Bias ply tire construction is a method that was used from the 1900's through the 1970's on passenger cars and light trucks. Bias ply tires feature ply cords that run at a 45 degree angle to the bead, and overlap in a crisscross pattern, depending on how many ply layers are used. This creates a strong tire, but bias ply tires have a tendency to follow breaks or ruts in the pavement. Bias ply tires are the most authentic choice for classic car restorations and traditional hot rod builds. Coker Tire offers a huge variety of bias ply tires for many applications.
